Star Wars Day has become a cultural phenomenon! It’s celebrated every year on May 4th by fans around the world. My family has celebrated for several years, mostly by making a special meal and watching one of the films, but there are tons of other fun things to do for Star Wars Day.
One year we tried to watch the original trilogy, but it was just too long to squeeze into a single day.
Whether you’re a new fan or saw the original trilogy in theaters, this holiday is for you!
Below I’ve rounded up a few of my family’s favorite activities. You’ll find crafts, printables, and even some recipes that I’ve shared on this blog over the years. Pick one, 2, or several to try with your kids this year.
What is Star Wars Day
The unofficial holiday may have started way back in the 1970s when the first movies were coming out. It’s based on a simple pun: May the Fourth (the date) sounds like May the force [be with you].
It started as a grassroots fan activity but has become an official Star Wars holiday. Now unofficially, fans have added Revenge of the Fifth (which sounds like revenge of the Sith) to make the fun last a day longer.
How to celebrate Star Wars Day
Watch a film
It might seem obvious to watch the movies on Star Wars Day, but you have more options than you do time. Watching the 9 primary films is about 20 hours, not even counting all the spin-off films and tv series.
Make a game of choosing which one to watch. Here are some creative ideas: Write out the titles on paper then draw one out of a bowl. Put the papers on the floor and have your cat choose. Draw up a bracket and have a quick rock, paper, scissors duel.
Attend a local event
Check local events calendars to see if there’s anything going on where you live. Places that are likely to plan something include the public library, a comic book store, or a movie theater. You could even throw your own party and have guests come in costume!
Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday in May, so the 2 holidays are pretty close and very rarely on the same day.
Cook some Star Wars recipes
Pick up a copy of The Star Wars Cookbook: Wookiee Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes. This book is loaded with cute and clever (and mostly easy) recipes to make.

Make Star Wars accessories
Get crafty and make some art that you can wear. Here on One Mama’s Daily Drama, I’ve shared how to make a tee shirt and several types of jewelry.
Do a Star Wars craft
One of my favorite easy craft ideas I’ve made is this DIY mini Death Star that hangs in my car. If you want even more ideas, check out this list of 20 adult crafts.
Paint an art project
Use a printable template to recreate an iconic landscape from Tatooine, Hoth, or Endor. Choose your favorite planet or paint all 3 of them.
Read a book
Visit your local library or shop online to pick of a Star Wars book for adults or kids. Make your reading extra nerdy by printing off these Star Wars bookmarks too.
Play a game
If your kids are too young to sit still through a whole movie, get them laughing and wiggling with a Star Wars dice game. This printable includes 2 paper dice – one with character names and the other with actions to do.
Color a coloring page
Print a pair of Star Wars color by number pages for an easy kids’ activity. These are done in the pixel art style, so they’re easy to color but you can’t see what the picture will be until you complete it!
Build with LEGO
There are many official LEGO Star Wars sets, but even if you don’t own any of them you can build something inspired by the series. Grab these printable Star Wars LEGO challenge idea cards.
Be sure to save this list of ideas so you can come back and try a few more of them next year. Who knows, one of them might become your favorite annual tradition!

Thank you for the tip about the Toys R Us event!
We were just planning to go to the comic shop but after reading your post we made time for both and our son had so much fun, he actually got confused and thought it was his birthday! We also told a few of our friends and they ended up taking their kids as well.
@Suzy – I’m so glad to hear that!
