This is the best-smelling Death Star ever. This DIY mini Death Star is an easy but awesome craft that uses the most random craft supply you never thought of using: car air freshener! All you need is a little paint to bring this craft together.
Sometimes I get the most ridiculous ideas. They usually pop into my head when I’m trying to fall asleep or when I should really be working on another more time-sensitive project. I’ve been planning the idea for this mini Death Star for a while. There is a serious lack of geeky air freshener out there.
So I decided to see if you can paint over car air freshener and still smell it. The result?
Lemon-scented Death Star!
Here’s how to make your own, which of course, can smell like anything you want.
How to make a mini Death Star
Supplies
- round car air freshener
- craft paint in black and white
- sponge paintbrush
- black paint pen (or permanent marker would probably work too)
Instructions
Start by protecting your work space with scrap paper.
Mix the black and white paint to create a light gray. The first time I did this, it ended up too dark. Start with a big dot of white and add just a little black. Basically, make an anime eyeball. Mix it all together with the brush.
Brush the gray paint onto one side of the air freshener and let it dry. You might need a second coat, which you can add after about half an hour. (Check the dry time on your paint.)
Let the second coat dry another half hour and flip it over. Paint the back in the same way.
When the gray is definitely dry, draw on the details. Start by drawing a circle for the super laser. Then just add a few horizontal lines that follow the curve of the circle. Add a few vertical lines.
You can also draw lines on the back, for accuracy. As my nine-year-old pointed out, it’s very important to not draw the super laser on the back too. Let the paint dry completely, about another half-hour per side.
When it’s all dry, your tiny Death Star is fully operational and ready for the car (or anywhere else you want to hang it). The best thing about this air freshener is that when it no longer smells like lemon, it will still be cute.
