Make your own Star Wars landscape art with classic scenes from Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor using printable templates.

Star Wars fans, get excited because it’s time to make some Star Wars landscape art!
Art is for everyone! If you don’t think you’re good at arts and crafts, maybe all you need is a bit of help getting started. It can be overwhelming to start with a blank page, so I created 3 printable templates.
Each of the templates is a scene from the original Star Wars trilogy.
Tatooine is the home of Luke Skywalker, the desert planet where he grew up with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru in A New Hope. Hoth is the snowy planet where the rebel base was hidden in The Empire Strikes Back. And Endor is the forest moon where the Ewoks live in Return of the Jedi.
You can be as film-accurate (or not) as you like. Add more details or copy my landscapes exactly. Have fun with it!
Watercolor tips
- Use more water for pale colors, and less water for bolder colors.
- If you add too much color, you can thin it out on the paper by adding more water.
- Rinse your brush between every color; change the cup of water often to avoid muddy colors.
- To avoid smearing the printer ink on the small pieces, dab with the brush instead of broad strokes. (Mine didn’t smear too much either way.)
- Water tends to make paper curl a bit. You can place a completely dry watercolored paper under a few heavy objects (like books) to flatten it back out.
How to paint a Star Wars landscape
Supplies
- printable templates (download below)
- watercolor paper
- watercolors and brush
- scissors
- glue
- black and white gel pens or Sharpies (optional)
Note: If watercolors aren’t your preferred medium, swap these supplies out for acrylic paint, colored pencils, pastels, etc.
Instructions
The general steps to paint each Star Wars landscape are the same. See below for more specifics on each one.
1. Trim your watercolor paper to 8.5×11 inches if necessary, then print the template from your computer.
2. Cut the page in half to separate the background from the detailed bits. (If you’re planning on framing the finished art, you may want to trim your background paper to the frame size.)
3. Use watercolors to paint the background and allow it to dry.
While the background dries, use watercolors to paint the elements on the other half of the page. Each one is different, depending on the scene, so I went into more detail below. Allow these to dry too, then cut each one out.
4. When all the pieces are painted and dry, use glue to assemble the scene. Layout the cutout pieces where you want them to be, then apply a small amount of glue to secure each one.
Bonus: I kept these elements simple, but feel free to use the extra watercolor paper to make your own details to add! Or use black and white pens to add smaller details.
Tatooine desert scene
For the background of the Tatooine landscape, use light brown for the sand and light blue for the sky. You can also include some pink, yellow, and orange to blend them together a bit and give it a sunset look.
The small elements are Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru’s house, a moisture evaporator, and a landspeeder. You can either paint them to be their natural colors (shades of brown or gray) or paint them black as if they’re silhouetted by the sunset.
The twin suns could be any shade of yellow or orange.
Hoth snow scene
Hoth is a snowy planet, so I wanted to come up with something better than an all-white landscape. For this one, paint the background using shades of gray and blue, and leave some white here and there.
The main element of this scene is the shield generator. I painted mine to more or less match the background colors.
The AT-AT and airspeeders are gray.
Endor forest scene
Endor has lots of trees, so I wanted to include them in the background and the cutout elements. Paint the background in shades of green and add some happy little trees. Use light blue for the sky.
For the added elements, there are more green trees. I included the shield generator bunker for this one, but you could draw the satellite antenna or leave out the bunker and hide some Ewoks in the trees.
The Death Star goes into the sky here. Paint it gray. I included it whole here, but you could trim away bits to make it look damaged.
