My kids have always loved Mad Libs – and I grew up with them too!

Over the years I’ve written a few of my own silly story activities inspired by Mad Libs. You can find them on these Mother’s Day card and Father’s Day card printables. I also wrote one for Talk Like a Pirate Day.

This fun and funny writing activity has a simple set of rules. Fold the paper in half and write the words on the list on the left – without peeking. They usually include parts of speech, like nouns and verbs, and I like to throw in a few other open-ended categories, like a number or a name.

After you choose your words, unfold the paper and read the story. Every time you come to a blank, read the word that goes along with that number.

The result will probably be a crazy story that barely makes sense, which is just what kids love about them.

The title of this winter story is “Snow Day Surprise.”

In it, your child wakes up to an unexpected snow day with school canceled. They’ll play with friends and go on a little adventure.

I imagined an abominable snowman or something similar when I was writing, but who knows what antics your little creative writers will get up to?

You can print and reuse these several times, although after the first reading, your kids will be able to anticipate what words will make it even sillier.

These would be fun for a snow day, of course. They’re also fun for a party. You could have each child write their own, or have kids work together in a group.
