My kids love playing with LEGO.
Sometimes they can get stuck on trying to follow instructions, though, and forgets that half the fun of LEGO is building your own creation. I’m happy to search for building tutorials online, but I also try to encourage them to create things on their own.
How to use the LEGO story builder printable
This can be as easy or challenging as you want it to be, so there really isn’t an age range on this. Obviously, it will be different if you’re playing with a preschooler or challenging a teen, but you can easily adapt this for your child at any stage.
Start by picking out a mix of LEGO bricks and pieces. Give your child a number of pieces and ask them to build anything they want. You know best what your child’s skill level is. Here are a few ideas:
- 12 bricks of different sizes
- 30 pieces, with a mix of bricks and house pieces
- 15 minifigure pieces
- 20 pieces, with mostly vehicle accessories
- a completely random pile of 30-40 pieces
- a full LEGO set without the instructions
After your child has built something, it’s time for the story builder. Ask your child to make up a story about whatever they just built.
Older kids can write out the story (including the title and author) on their own. Younger kids might need some storytelling guidance. And preschoolers could dictate a story that you can write down.
Write the story on the lines. Then, draw a picture to illustrate or take a photo of the LEGO creation and attach it to the page.
Encourage your child to play out the story they wrote with whatever they built.
