This classic game gets a fun twist when you use Goldfish® crackers for the pieces, currently on rollback at Walmart, just $6.46 for the 30-ounce cartons in-store only. The best part? Family game time goes perfectly with snack time.
I am counting down the days until spring is here! Spring means warmer weather and bright, sunny days. It means road trips and picnics. It means vacation time with family games.
Two things my family loves are podcasts and games. Usually, spring break means that we will be road-tripping to visit my husband’s family. It’s a six-hour drive, so we download a few of our favorite podcasts or an audiobook and load up on games and snacks for the car ride.
When my kids were little, they would play the alphabet game or do mazes while snacking. It didn’t take long for them to drift off to sleep on the long car ride, though. Now that they are both in middle school, honestly, not a lot has changed.
They still want to play games in the car and they still ask for Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers to snack on. Just a few weeks ago, my son (11) asked me if I could make some rainbow snack mix because it had been “forever” since I did.
As usual, I headed to my local Walmart and picked up a couple of boxes of Goldfish crackers. When you’re feeding tweens and their friends, you have to buy snacks in bulk! I purchased the Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers Colors and the Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers Cheddar.
While the kids were crunching away, I realized that the crackers would make perfect game pieces. They come in several flavors and colors. And of course, whether you win or lose, you get to eat the pieces when you’re done!
Spring checkers game with Goldfish crackers
Inspired by the crackers and the season, I decided to make a spring checkers game.
This printable game includes a checkerboard and a scoreboard. I designed the printables with bright, cheerful spring colors.
Use Goldfish crackers as the game pieces. You can play cheddar vs. pretzel or sort through the colors to pick two different teams.

The rules:
Each player needs 12 crackers. Choose a side; each player puts their pieces on the colored squares. (Note: I set it up wrong the first time and my son quickly corrected me!)
Take turns moving one piece by one square. If you “jump” over your opponent – eat that cracker. The last player with a cracker on the board wins.
Keep a tally on the scoreboard. You can play until one person wins more games than the other.
For added fun, make it a family challenge and do a mini-bracket. Mom vs. Dad. Brother vs. Sister. The winner of each match plays against the other for a final winner.

Take this spring checkers game on your next family road trip. It will keep the kids entertained {and fed} for quite a while. This would also be a fun game to take to a picnic.
We frequently head to our local park to walk the trails, so bringing along the spring checkers and Goldfish crackers made for a perfect break along the way.
