So many winter activities revolve around Christmas, and it can be challenging to find other things to do when the holiday has passed. While we’ve got a few more months of cold winter weather ahead, I put together this list of winter writing prompts.
Use them at home with your kids – for fun or for homeschooling. Print them for your individual classroom or club. These are fun for all ages.
Younger kids will likely need more help, but this is a fun way to practice writing letters and words. Older kids can choose one of the ideas and be a bit more thoughtful.
Writing prompt ideas
For this printable, I included 5 writing prompts. They’re all open-ended, but here are a few ideas.
- My favorite thing about winter is…
- Traditions? Snow days? What makes it your favorite? Describe it.
- I woke up to discover it had snowed last night…
- What happens next? It could be realistic or fantastic!
- If I visited the arctic…
- What would you do? This is a great exercise for all 5 senses.
- If I had to hibernate like a bear in the winter…
- Imagine what it would be like. Where would you stay? What would you do besides snooze?
- I’m looking forward to summer because…
- Most kids like summer more than winter, but what makes it special?
There are also several lines to write on. They’re ruled for younger kids who need a bit more guidance on letter size and spacing.
You could also use these prompts on different paper, a notebook – or even typing.
