One of the best ways to save money on your grocery bill is to use what you already have. I made a series of printables to help you do an inventory. Be sure to grab the pantry inventory, spice cabinet inventory, and freezer inventory sheets too!

Refrigerator organizing

I wrote a whole separate post on refrigerator organizing. The best thing you can do is keep like items together and clean it out regularly. While most perishables just don’t last very long, I’m always surprised when I find a condiment bottle that expired months ago. And honestly, we all end up with a tub of leftovers that got pushed to the back – and don’t even know what it is now.

My printable refrigerator inventory is divided into 4 categories: meat & dairy, produce, condiments, and other. That other category can be for leftovers or something else you buy often (like drinks) that doesn’t fit in another category.

Each section has lines to write down the item, amount you have, and the use-by date. You can be as precise as you like or estimate.

While packaged food usually has a date stamped on it, fresh items or anything you’ve repackaged won’t. A good rule of thumb is that an opened package or leftovers are good for a week or so. Some things will be fine for longer. When in doubt, throw it out.
