Many years ago I made a set of printable tangrams for my kids. They were simple and cute – and became one of the most popular kids’ activities on One Mama’s Daily Drama.
I decided it was definitely time to make another set and was inspired by my favorite holiday to make this new printable.
Your kids will love my newest printable set – Halloween tangrams. I made a set of tile pieces in fun Halloween colors and eight challenge cards to go with them.
If you’re looking for fun fall and Halloween kids’ activities you can do at home without too much prep, these are perfect. Download the printable, print and cut out the cards, and challenge your children to try building them all.
Or make your own tangrams in any theme using this printable tangrams template!
What are tangrams
Tangrams are Chinese puzzles made from seven different geometric shapes that combine to form a square. You can mix them to make all kinds of other pictures too.
Follow challenge cards to recreate the pictures or encourage your kids to come up with their own ideas.
Tangrams are a fun way to practice fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving. They also help with learning colors and shapes. There’s a bit of math involved too, although your kids might not realize they’re doing it while they are trying to line up the edges and corners.
Halloween tangrams
These Halloween tangrams are a fun kids’ activity to do at home. There’s no right or wrong way to play with them.
- Set up the cards and pieces and let your child choose a picture to build.
- Turn the cards face down to create a draw pile for a surprise building challenge.
- Print enough pieces for multiple kids and challenge them to see who can build the picture first.
- Mix up several sets of pieces and encourage kids to create giant patterns or their own designs.
I made a set of Halloween tangrams pieces in festive colors: orange, green, and purple.
There are eight different challenge cards with fun Halloween pictures to build.
- haunted house
- crow
- bat
- cat
- witch
- candle
- owl
- pumpkin
All of the challenge card pictures can be build with a single set of seven tangrams pieces, with the exception of the pumpkin, which needs two sets.
Printable Tangrams
This printable is available as a PDF download. It includes three pages – one with four sets of Halloween tangrams shapes and two with challenge cards.
The printed shapes measure approximately 3.5-inches square (before you cut into individual shapes). The challenge cards can be cut to 3.5×5-inches each.
How to set up the Halloween tangrams
- Download the file below, unzip it, and print the PDFs. I recommend card stock for durability.
- Cut out the four squares of pieces, then carefully cut each square into its smaller shapes.
- Cut both pages of challenge cards into four pieces along the dotted lines. Trim them to 3.5×5-inches if you prefer.
- Playtime!
