The license plate game is a classic kids’ activity to play in the car. It’s a great boredom buster, no matter what ages your kids are because it gets them looking out the windows.
I thought it would be fun to create a printable version of the game. This license plate printable game includes a map of all 50 states. They’re labeled with full names for all of the states.
You’ll need to bring along some crayons or colored pencils in assorted colors. I also like a clipboard for writing on, but for younger kids, a nice soft lapboard is great too.

How to play the license plate game
You can play this game with just one person or the whole car.
Look out the window at the cars on the road around you. Identify the state on each license plate and color it in on the map. Every time you spot a new license plate, color in that state.
When you get to your destination, count how many different states you saw along the way. You almost certainly won’t see them all, but you might be surprised how many you find.
Variations:
- Assign each person in the car a color. When they see a new state, have the person with the map color it with their color. At the end, count up the states to see who saw the most unique plates!
- Color the states to match the license plate colors.
- Practice writing the capitols of the states.
