Flat LEGO Christmas Ornament Designs

Make your own custom LEGO ornaments, inspired by classic ball ornaments. These are so easy to make and perfect for using all those tiny dots in your LEGO bins.

LEGO building tips

I listed the pieces I used below, but you can change them up to fit what you already have at home.

• Use any color! I have a lot of pastel pieces leftover from Friends sets and Dots, but very few red and green.
• If you don’t have many smooth pieces, you can use ones with studs to decorate.
• I used a 2×4 technic piece with holes to attach the ribbon. There are lots of other shapes that could also work. You just need something small with a hole.

How to make flat LEGO ornaments

Supplies

For the base ornament:

• 4 quarter circle or 2 half circle plates (or full circles if you have them)
• 4×4 plate
• 2×4 plate with holes

For decorating:

• circle, square, and wedge dots
• other assorted flat pieces
• 10-inch ribbon

Instructions

1. Build a circle with a cap.

Line up pieces to create a flat circle. You can use 4 quarters, 2 halves, or a mix. Stick a flat piece on the back to hold them together. A 4×4 worked for me.

For the cap, add a 2×4 technic piece at the top, sticking out from the circles.

2. Decorate the ornament.

Use dots or other flat pieces to decorate the front of the ornament. Polkadots, stripes, and patterns are classic designs.

3. Add a ribbon.

Slide a length of ribbon through the hole in the technic piece and tie a knot.

4. Hang on the tree.

Make as many ornaments as you like. The more, the merrier!

Loop the ribbon over a branch to hang the ornaments on the Christmas tree. These would be cute to make alongside my other LEGO Christmas ornaments.

Ornament design ideas

Here are a few tips for designing your LEGO Christmas ornaments:

1. Stick to 2 or 3 colors to keep it simple.
2. Experiment with repeating patterns.
3. Consider how the patterns will end at the edge.

This Christmas decoration idea is perfect for a small tree! If your kids have their own little bedroom trees, this would be a fun way to decorate. At the end of the holiday season, take the ornaments apart and return all the pieces to your LEGO storage.
