This craft was originally shared in 2017 as part of my Christmas gift ideas with printables and has been updated for clarity.

My family discovered the Christmas pickle at a local Christmas tree farm in the 90s. It quickly became a Christmas morning tradition for me and my siblings.

In case you’re unfamiliar, here’s a quick summary of the Christmas pickle tradition:

A parent hides a pickle ornament on the tree. After all of the gifts have been opened, the children race to find the pickle hidden somewhere in the tree. Whoever finds it first gets an extra gift.

I loved the tradition as a kid and have shared it with my own kids. We always make the extra gift something small and inexpensive – and usually something that is naturally shared.

One year it was a double-ended peanut butter and jelly spatula. The kids were young and just learning to make their own sandwiches. Another year it was a card game.

My kids (now teens) are really competitive about finding the pickle, despite the fact that they know the gift is for them to share!

Give someone a Christmas pickle this year with a fun printable gift tag that introduces the story.

Supplies

  • hand-blown glass pickle ornament
  • card stock
  • washi tape
  • Printable Christmas pickle card (Download below)

Instructions

1. Print the gift tag.

I recommend printing this on 8.5×11-inch card stock.

Print the front, then flip your paper over and print the back, making sure the paper goes through your printer facing the right direction.

2. Cut out the tag.

You can use regular scissors or a paper trimmer to cut around the outside of the tags.

3. Attach the pickle.

I used a cute matching washi tape to stick the ornament cord to the back of the card. As an alternative, you could use a hole punch to make a hole and tie the ornament in place.

Of course, you can also just put the pickle ornament and gift tag in a box or bag.
