If you need an easy-peasy fall craft to make with your kids, you’ll appreciate how simple this pipe cleaner pumpkin craft is to make. All you need is a package of pipe cleaner, aka chenille stems.
I made these using pastel green and pink because I love pink for fall and Halloween decor. But if you want to use classic colors for a more traditional pumpkin, go for it!
The basic pumpkin craft is pretty simple, but there are lots of ways to customize it if you want to make yours a bit different.
Pipe cleaner pumpkin ideas
Here are some easy ways to customize this craft.
- Color
I used pastel pink and green, but you can make yours with classic orange and brown, or any colors you like. - Smaller
The instructions use 12-inch pipe cleaners and the finished pumpkin is about 4 inches across and 3 inches tall. If you cut the pipe cleaner in half (using scissors) and craft using 6-inch pieces, the finished pumpkin will be 2 inches across and 1.5 inches tall. - Beads
If you have a stash of pony beads, you can string them onto the pink pipe cleaners after twisting the bottom together and before securing the stem. - Fuller
Using 4 pieces of pipe cleaner folded means there are 8 segments to the finished pumpkin, but you can use more to make the pumpkin look fuller.
How to make a pipe cleaner pumpkin
Supplies
- pastel pipe cleaners (or classic pipe cleaner colors)
- scissors, optional
Instructions
Fold the pipe cleaner in half.
Start with 4 pink pipe cleaners. Fold each one in half, giving it a bit of a pinch in the center.
Twist the centers together.
Divide the folded pipe cleaners into 2 pairs, then put them together at the centers. Twist the centers so that they all hold together.
Separate individual pieces.
Separate the pipe cleaner pieces and spread them out so that they’re more or less even spaced around the wheel. They might be a bit fussy, so don’t worry about making them exact.
Bend the pipe cleaner tips.
Go around the circle and bend the tip of each pipe cleaner, about half an inch.
Gather the tips.
Set a green pipe cleaner where you can easily reach it. Go around the circle picking up the ends of the pipe cleaners and holding them in the center. All of the bent tips should be sticking up from the center of the ball.
Secure the stem.
Hold the pink ends with one hand and use the other to start wrapping the green pipe cleaner around them. Start with one or 2 times around and pull the green pipe cleaner snugly so that it holds the pink ends in place.
Wrap the stem.
Continue wrapping the green pipe cleaner around the pink to cover all of it and create the pumpkin’s stem.
Make a leaf.
When the stem is covered, you should have enough green pipe cleaner left to bend it into a leaf shape. Tuck the end of the pipe cleaner into the stem.
As an alternative, you can twist the green end into a little curly vine.
Shape the pumpkin.
At this point the pumpkin is complete. Bend and shape all of the pipe cleaners until you’re happy with the shape.
Once you’ve made one of these following the steps, you’ll be able to make several quickly. These are fun and easy to make and look cute displayed in a group for fall decor.
