According to National Today, January 11th is National Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day each year.

Morse code is a system of dots and dashes that dates back to the 1800s as a way to communicate quickly using a telegraph machine. Each letter is made up of a combination of dots and dashes, with space between each letter and more between each word.

I’m not sure where National Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day came from, but it’s a fun excuse to learn how to spell out your name. Kids can also use the alphabet to send secret coded messages.

Morse code is commonly signaled in beeps on a telegraph machine, but it can also be created with light or other sounds. It would be a fun experiment to test different objects for sending messages!

To learn more about Morse code, visit this Wikipedia article. It has lots of information on the history and how it’s used. It’s also where I found the International Morse Code alphabet used in this worksheet.

Morse code worksheet

This printable Morse code worksheet includes the 26 letters in the International Morse Code alphabet. Have your child write out their name in English, then each letter in Morse code beneath it.

The bottom of the page includes several lines for practice writing.

After your child has practiced writing their name a few times, try other methods. Spell it with sound using a piano keyboard or with light by flicking a flashlight on and off.
