Mix up a simple homemade waffle batter with a twist. All you need are a bottle of orange extract and a bag of chocolate chips to turn plain waffles into an indulgent treat.
When I was a kid, my mom would put a Terry’s Chocolate Orange in everybody’s stockings at Christmas. It was a special treat and there’s something about smacking the orange against a table to break it into pieces that fits the chaos of the holidays. Naturally, I kept this tradition with my own kids.
If you love this flavor combo, you’re in good company. These chocolate orange waffles capture the two flavors perfectly. I used milk chocolate chips, but you could easily swap for dark chocolate.
Waffle making tips
Here are a few things I do to make the best waffles:
- Make sure the waffle iron is good and hot before you make the first waffle. I let mine preheat through a whole cycle.
- Most waffle irons are cast iron or nonstick, but a spritz of cooking oil doesn’t hurt.
- My waffle iron makes 4 4-inch square waffles that break apart. Its fits right around 1 cup of batter. Yours might be different and it takes some trial-and-error to find the ideal amount. (See photos where a waffle is missing a corner.)
- I add the chocolate chips to each batch so that they’re evenly distributed. If you add them to the batter, you’ll almost certainly have a few waffles with too many chips and some with almost none.

- 1.75 cups all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 2 eggs
- 1.75 cups milk
- 0.5 cup canola oil
- 1 teaspoon orange extract
- 0.5 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
1. Mix dry ingredients.
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and baking powder.

2. Mix wet ingredients.
In a separate bowl or measuring cup, combine eggs, milk, oil, and extract.

3. Combine mixtures.
Pour the wet mixture into the dry and whisk until just combined. The batter may be a bit lumpy.

4. Bake waffles.
Heat the waffle iron. Add a scoop of batter and sprinkle a handful of chocolate chips over the batter before closing the lid. Cook the waffle until done according to your machine’s instructions.

Repeat until all the batter is cooked. Serve hot; these are so flavorful they don’t really need any toppings, but add any you prefer. Store cooled waffles in a covered container in the refrigerator. These freeze as well as any waffle recipe.
