I partnered with Red Gold Tomatoes and Laura’s Lean Beef to create this amazing, delicious Tex-Mex recipe.
Here in Texas, grilling season is really like ten months long. Unless it is below freezing, someone is probably outside grilling somewhere. Summer is still the best time to grill though and my family probably cooks outside once per week. Grilling is one of my favorite ways to not heat up the kitchen when it’s nearing 100 degrees!
When I dreamed up this recipe, I had no idea it would be so good. I mean, I hoped it would be a delicious homage to my family’s favorite meal: tacos. What I didn’t expect was that both of my kids would love it (even though it’s a bit spicy) and my nephew would say that it was the best burger ever (even though he only ever eats burgers with “meat and ketchup.”)
I think that just goes to show that you need every element of this recipe, so don’t skip the salsa or avocado spread! Both are easy to whip up in a few minutes anyway.
How to make a Texas burger
Ingredients
- 8-10 hamburger buns
- for the salsa:
- 1 10-ounce can of Red Gold petite diced tomatoes and green chilis
- 1/2 cup red onion
- for the avocado spread:
- 1 cup mashed avocado
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- for the burgers:
- 2.5 pounds ground beef
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
Instructions
1. Make the salsa and avocado spread.
The salsa and avocado spread can be made ahead of time and chilled while the burgers cook.
For the salsa, dice the red onion small and put it in a bowl or jar. Drain the tomato/chilis and add them to the onion. Stir to combine and refrigerate until ready to serve.

For the spread, I just used packaged avocado mash. You could chop and mash your own avocado, but I never have an avocado ripe when I need it to be! Combine the avocado, lime juice, and salt in a bowl and stir. It should have the consistency of mayo, more or less. Refrigerate this too; the lime juice will keep it green for hours, if not a day or so.
2. Prepare the patties.
To make the burgers, combine the ground beef and spices in a large mixing bowl. I usually mix it by hand. Divide the meat into ten quarter-pound burgers and shape into patties.
Cook the burger patties on the grill until done. They should take about 5 minutes per side.

3. Assemble the burger.
To serve, place a patty on the bottom bun and top with salsa. Spread a generous amount of avocado on the inside of the top bun and set it on top.

You can easily customize this recipe to your family’s flavor preferences. Change up the burger seasoning, add cheese, or include other toppings like lettuce. This goes great with a side of tortilla chips.
