Keep the kids busy indoors when it’s too cold to go outside this winter. These snowflake lacing cards are great for little kids to practice fine motor skills. Older ones will enjoy making paper snowflakes for hanging around the house.
During those cold, dark winter days, it’s fun to have a little something to keep the kids busy. When we’re at home and indoors all day, it doesn’t take long for us to all get a little stir-crazy.
This printable activity is fun for a wide age range and can be done in a couple of ways. I’ve got a little tutorial on how to prepare the cards and then a printable below.
Snowflake lacing cards
Supplies
- printable snowflake templates (at the end)
- card stock
- scissors
- hole punch
- yarn, ribbon, or cord for lacing
Instructions
Start by printing and cutting out each of the snowflakes. There are four different designs.
You can either print them onto card stock and use them as-is or use the card stock as a template to trace the snowflakes onto other paper.
Adults may need to help younger kids with cutting or you may want to cut them out ahead of time just to get prep out of the way. This is also good for cutting practice for younger kids.

Use a hole punch to punch out all of the black dots on each snowflake. To get the dot in the middle, just carefully fold the snowflake in half to punch it.

Cut your yarn or ribbon to about 24-30 inches long. The younger the child, the skinnier you’re going to want the yarn to be. I found that while the wide ribbon looks pretty, it’s a little harder to poke through the center hole after a few rounds.

Paper snowflakes
Once the snowflakes are ready, your child can have fun lacing. Younger kids will enjoy threading the yarn through the holes and practicing fine motor skills.

Older kids can use ribbon to make a snowflake that can be hung up as a decoration. Just tie a knot in the end and these look cute hanging all over the house.

There’s no wrong way to lace the cards and your kids can come up with some creative patterns.

oh so cute! great for a garland or mobile or to decorate a tree next year!
I like the mobile idea. I feel like once the Christmas decorations have come down, the house is kind of empty. I need winter decorations that aren’t Christmas!
These are great for kids. They would be awesome hanging on gift bags.
That’s a great idea! Plenty of blank space on the back for writing too.
