I’ve been making this salad for years. I think I first had it in a Middle Eastern restaurant, but it’s become a staple at lots of American restaurants. This salad recipe is so simple to make at home.
Of course, there are tons of ways to change this up. I chop my ingredients small to appeal to kids and adults. You could leave the vegetables bigger, but I find that they are harder to eat and sometimes jump off the plate. Nobody likes to be whipped in the face by an onion while trying to take a bite – or shot by an olive from across the table.
This salad makes a delicious side to go with Mediterranean chicken and orzo. To turn this side salad into an entree, simply add some grilled chicken. I recommend serving this salad with some pita or flatbread and homemade hummus.

How to make Greek salad
Ingredients
- 8 cups romaine lettuce
- 1/2 cup red onion
- 1 cup cucumber
- 1 cup bell pepper
- 1/4 cup kalamata olives
- 1/4 cup feta cheese
- balsamic dressing
Instructions
1. Wash and chop fresh produce.
Chop the romaine into small pieces. Rinse it and use a salad spinner to dry it. Peel the red onion and slice it in half. Dice the onion into 1/4-inch pieces.

Cut the cucumber into 4 pieces lengthwise. Then cut along the center to remove seeds and dice into 1/4-inch pieces. Cut the bell pepper into 4 large pieces and remove the pith and seeds. Dice the bell pepper into 1/4-inch pieces too.

2. Combine vegetables.
Put the lettuce, onion, cucumber, and bell pepper in a large serving bowl.
3. Add the packaged ingredients.
Blot the olives dry on a paper towel and add them to the bowl. Crumble the feta and add it to the salad. Toss gently to incorporate.

4. Dress and serve.
Drizzle the balsamic dressing over the salad and serve immediately. If you’re making this chopped Greek salad ahead of time, don’t add the dressing until you’re ready to serve it.
