It feels like this year has both dragged on forever and gone too quickly. And I’m pretty sure I say that every year.

Sure, there have been some bad days, failures, and moments that I’d just like to ignore and move on. But there have also been some incredible experiences and memories I’ll cherish forever.

My favorite way to plan ahead for the new year is to reflect on the past year. I’ll be seeing what went great and what didn’t so I can keep doing the good and avoid the bad (where I can).

How to do a year in review

It’s easy for a few bad days to make it feel like a bad year. But the opposite can also be true. To do a realistic recap, it’s important to look at the good times and bad ones, the big days and simple ones.

To use this printable, start by filling in the year in the first column where it reads “Highlights from ____.” Fill in a highlight from each month, January through December.

Then fill in the middle column with your favorite things from the year. There are lines for a meal, book, movie/show, and song.

Next, think about your best accomplishments, new things you tried, and areas where you failed.

At the bottom, fill in the upcoming year where it reads “Things I want to change, learn, or try in _____.” Use that section to brainstorm for next year. Set goals based on where you feel like you did well. Try again on things that didn’t turn out well. And be creative – there are no rules!
