Make this DIY kids identity badge for travel safety. Print the cards, fill out your info, and laminate them for durability so that your child will have all the important information in case of an emergency away from home.
(Note that this is not an alternative to other safety precautions you might take and every family is different, so please gauge whether this is right for yours.)
My family doesn’t travel a lot, but when we do I like to be really organized.
I have printable packing checklists for the kids. I have a go-to list of travel-friendly snacks that we can take to avoid expensive fast food
And I have a giant inventory of things for the kids to do in the car:
I like being organized because travel is stressful and it gives me a little peace of mind. Everything is nice and wrapped up.
There is one thing about travel that I can’t control and that’s safety. I mean, I do everything I can to ensure my family is safe, but no matter how organized I am, things can go wrong. That’s why I made this printable kids’ identity badge.
We’re headed to a local Comic-Con this weekend where there will be tens of thousands of people. My kids have never been the type to just run off in a crowd, but they do get distracted.
At Comic-Con, there are just too many shiny things to look at. Wearing this printable kids’ identity badge won’t keep them from getting lost, but hopefully, it will help them get found if necessary.
My kids are smart, but they often lag behind in things that “most kids” can do at any given age, like memorizing a phone number. I think technology is partly the issue.
We don’t have a landline, so they don’t associate any number with home. They rarely go anywhere without me, so calling home never comes up.
Still, I wish they could remember my cell phone number.
Kids travel badge
This simple project makes safety fun for kids. It also gives parents a little peace of mind, knowing that in an emergency, all of the important information is there. I’ve seen a few other products that are similar.
The most popular is the washable tattoo, but there is only so much info that you can write on your child’s arm. For parents of kids with several allergies, that isn’t practical.
While we can’t protect our kids from everything, we can give them the tools they need. For more information on safety, check out the tips and search by category at SafeKids.org.
I made this printable kids’ travel ID to include all of the information that I thought was important. It is simple, but incredibly valuable if you need it.
Supplies
- Printable kids ID badge (download below)
- Fellowes self-adhesive laminating sheets
- Single hole punch
- Lanyard
Instructions
Print the badge form and cut it out. There are four to an 8.5×11-inch pages, and I recommend printing on card stock for extra durability.
Fill in your child’s personal information. Of course, use your own discretion on what should or shouldn’t be included.
Let your child add personal decorations to the back of the badge, such as stickers, drawings, or other mostly-flat items.
Place the badge face down on a self-adhesive sheet. Fold over the self-adhesive sheet to cover the back of the badge. Smooth it out and make sure the edges are secure.
Cut around the edge of the badge, leaving about a quarter-inch border so that the laminate stays in place.
Using a hole punch, make a hole in the top of the badge.
How to wear
- Attach it to a lanyard. For young children, use the variety that has a breakaway safety.
- Fold it in half to hide personal info and slide it into a plastic lanyard sleeve.
- Put it inside a pocket, backpack, or other enclosed area for older kids who can be a bit more responsible.
