9 delicious grilled cheese upgrades

Grilled cheese sandwiches are the best. They’re easy to make and pleasing for kids and adults. Take your sandwich to the next level with these easy recipes to make a grilled cheese sandwich.

9 delicious grilled cheese upgrades

Grilled or toasted cheese sandwiches are a staple in my house. Cheese. Bread. Warm. What’s not to like?

While a simple sandwich is good, it isn’t really filling for teens or adults. At my house, we like to load our sandwiches up with all kinds of extra toppings. Make these grilled cheese sandwiches in a toaster, oven, panini press, skillet, or however you typically do.

Here are a few of our favorite.

Grilled cheese upgrades

1. Tuna melt

This one can be served between two slices or regular sandwich bread or as an open-faced sandwich on an English muffin.

Ingredients: canned tuna (mixed up as tuna salad if you prefer), swiss cheese

2. Bacon apple grilled cheese

My great-grandma always served her apple pie with slices of cheddar cheese and I never understood why. As a kid, those two flavors did not go together. As an adult, I’m happy to say that my kids’ favorite sandwich is the bacon apple grilled cheese.

Ingredients: cooked bacon, thinly sliced apples, and muenster cheese

3. Hot Italian sub

This is the best sandwich to get at Firehouse Subs. Sub or hoagie buns make these easy to fill up with a lot of meat and cheese!

Ingredients: roast beef, salami, Italian dressing, and provolone cheese

4. Pizza grilled cheese

To really make this one amazing, use refrigerated/frozen pizza dough and cook it in a waffle maker.

Ingredients: pepperoni, marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese

5. Breakfast panini

You can serve this for breakfast, of course, but it also makes a good breakfast-for-dinner meal.

Ingredients: bacon, egg (scrambled or fried), and cheddar cheese

6. Hawaiian grilled cheese

If you like Hawaiian pizza, you’ll love this sandwich version.

Ingredients: ham, pineapple, monterey jack

7. Bacon avocado grilled cheese

I prefer the mashed, but sliced avocado should work too.

Ingredients: cooked bacon, avocado, provolone cheese

8. Caprese grilled cheese

Use a classic basil pesto sauce or substitute spinach pesto. Homemade is delicious, but so is the store-bought variety.

Ingredients: sliced tomato, pesto sauce, mozzarella cheese

9. Reuben grilled cheese

A traditional Reuben is made with corned beef. If you’re not a fan of sauerkraut, grilled onions are a good alternative.

Ingredients: deli sliced roast beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese

Sandwiches are one of my favorite easy weeknight family meals. They are usually pretty fast to make, especially if I already have all the ingredients in the refrigerator or pantry. And if you have picky eaters at your house, this is one meal where each child can choose their toppings without too much extra work from parents.
