There are dozens of new variations – like this buttery curry chex mix and strawberry lemonade muddy buddies. But there’s something about the original that’s just perfect for family holidays at home.
Chex mix is incredibly versatile. If you don’t have something on hand or have dietary restrictions, swap the cereal variety, change up the mix-ins, and customize it to fit your family.

How to make classic chex mix
Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1.5 teaspoons table salt
- 0.75 teaspoon garlic powder
- 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
- 8 cups chex cereal, any variety
- 1 cup pretzels
- 1 cup Gardetto rye chips
- 1/2 cup roasted peanuts

Instructions
1. Melt butter.
Melt the butter in your largest stock pot over medium heat on the stove. When the butter has melted, turn off the heat.
2. Add seasonings.
Add the Worcestershire, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder to the butter. Stir with a spatula to combine.
3. Combine dry ingredients.
Add the cereal, pretzels, rye chips, and peanuts to the seasoned butter mixture. Gently toss to combine using a spatula until the cereal is thoroughly coated.
4. Bake in the oven.
Heat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the cereal mixture onto a large baking sheet. Bake the chex mix for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow it to cool about 30 minutes or until it’s cool enough to touch. Transfer the classic chex mix to a serving bowl or air-tight container for storage.
