We eat pizza about one every week or two. Pizza has a reputation for being an unhealthy junk food, but it doesn’t have to be. Start with this homemade pizza crust and add your own toppings. A combination of lean meat, fresh vegetables, and a little cheese to hold it all together is perfect.
Homemade pizza crust
This recipe is adapted from the October issue of Family Circle magazine.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 package dry active yeast
- 2-3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions:
Put the water in the bowl of your stand mixer and stir in the yeast. Let stand 5 minutes. Add the oil.
In a separate large bowl (or measuring cup), whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the mixer. Using the dough hook, mix the dough just until it comes together.
Take the dough out and knead it by hand into a smooth ball.Put the dough in a greased bowl and press it down gently. Leave it to rise for about an hour.
Remove the dough from the bowl and gently flatten it. Roll it out to your desired shape. I like using a 11″x13″ sheet tray for a thick and chewy pizza crust. You could also divide it in half to make two round pizzas.
To bake your pizza, preheat the oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. I use a pizza stone, but it isn’t essential. Add your toppings and bake for about 18-20 minutes.
Pizza is one of our favorite family meals because it can really be made in a lot of different ways. You can make it meatless, add any number of toppings, or come up with a creative new flavor. You can even divide the dough into smaller portions and make personal pizzas.
Topping ideas:
Classic pepperoni
Veggie lover’s with bell peppers, onions, and olives

Oh gosh I wish I could get my oven that hot! I think I’ll have to blame my lackluster pizza dough on a wimpy oven *L*

I don’t like cooking and it’s nice to have a home cooked meal now and again . Pizza is a lot of work but I know there are appliances you can get that make making dough easier .

We used to use hot roll mix to make pizza dough. I don’t even know if they still make it!
Thanks for the recipe! I will try it.

Yum! Use rapid rise yeast and either don’t let it rise or let it rise in a worm spot for about 20 minutes.

HA! I am reading this after we have just completed our weekly tradition Sat. evening dinner: homemade pizza from scratch. My husband has taken over dough duties and does an outstanding job…perfectly thin and crispy every time. He does a thick and tasty crust for the kids. I love Pizza Saturdays and I love this F post.
