Every year during spring break (and again in the summer) my kids go and stay with my husband’s parents.
Bless them, because I think it is the only reason I’m not completely crazy now. A week “off” from the job of mom helps me recharge, catch up on things, and spend time with my husband.
The only problem is that when the kids come home, they never tell me what they’ve been doing. Not unlike our daily after-school routine, our end of vacation routine consists of me asking 1000 questions and getting a vague idea that they did do something fun, even if they don’t really remember what.
Now that they are old enough to write and keep a journal, I think just a little prompting will help. This journal can be filled out in about five minutes a day.

Spring break journal
I made this spring break journal simple and printer-friendly. It doesn’t use a lot of ink but is still colorful and pretty. There are seven pages, including the cover. Here’s what you get:
Cover: “My spring break” with room for a name
Page 1: five short “about my trip” fill-in-the-blank lines
2-5: space to write about one thing that happened each day
6: five short “highlights of the trip” fill-in-the-blank lines
If your trip is longer, just print extra copies of pages 2-5 and add them when you put it together. The pages are intentionally blank on the back so that your child can draw pictures. Alternatively, you could print double-sided on thicker paper.

Journal assembly
You don’t need much to put this together.
Supplies:
- scissors
- hole punch
- 1-inch book ring
- printed spring break journal (download below)
- paper trimmer, optional
Instructions:
Start by printing the journal. I used card stock so that it would be sturdy. The pages are set up to print 2 per sheet of 8.5×11-inch paper.
Cut the journal pages in half. (The finished version is about 8.5×5.5 inches.)
Punch a hole in the top left corner of each page. Slip the pages onto the book ring.

Don’t forget to pack a few art supplies, like crayons and a super-fun pen so that your child has extra motivation to write.
Whether you are sending the kids off or going somewhere with them, this is a fun way to get their perspective on vacation.

The file below is 4 pages. Print on 8.5×11-inch paper or card stock and then cut each one in half. All printables are for personal use only.
