An academic calendar is a handy way to keep track of the school year at a glance. It’s great for parents, teachers, and older students. You can use it alongside a school planner or by itself.
The best way to use one is to sit down at the beginning of the school year and put everything on the calendar. Your school district might put one out already, but it probably has everything on it (which can be overwhelming if you have a second grader who doesn’t take the STAAR test or play football).
And of course, it’s important to update it throughout the school year because we all know that lots of school events are added as we go.
I personally use an academic calendar in addition to my personal planner. It’s helpful when planning ahead because I can see everything coming up at school on one page.
When I’m on the phone with the pediatrician and they’re asking if I’m available on a random Tuesday in 2 months, I can easily see whether that’s benchmark testing or a magical day with nothing planned yet.
What is an academic calendar
An academic calendar is a 12-month calendar that follows the school year from fall to summer, rather than from January to December. It usually includes all the important school-related dates, like holidays and testing.
You might also want to add:
- field trips
- dress up days
- sports practice and games
- academic competitions
- annual events, like Hispanic Heritage Month
- special events, like Teacher Appreciation Day
How to use this calendar
This academic calendar is a really handy page to put in the front of your planner or even hang up on the refrigerator.
It’s got 12 months plus space to create a key at the bottom. On each line, you can write in different events or categories and mark the box with a colored highlighter. Then, on the calendar, you just highlight the dates with the same color.
This is a pretty way to keep track of everything in one place.
