There’s something so yummy and indulgent about a hot sandwich. This pretzel pocket sandwich is delicious for lunchtime or dinner. It needs only a few ingredients and basic baking skills.

This pretzel pocket sandwich recipe is easy to put together, even if you’re a beginner at baking. Don’t let the number of steps scare you off. Making the pretzel dough is the main time-consuming part, but once you’ve learned that, you can make these pretty fast.
Making homemade pretzels is fun. I used this crusty pretzel roll recipe from Gather for Bread, but you can use any homemade pretzel dough recipe. You can also opt for frozen bread dough for a shortcut. Just make sure you thaw it completely to catch up to the step where the dough is ready.
Homemade pretzel pocket sandwich
These are very similar to a pocket sandwich you might find in the frozen food section. I just used a meat and cheese filling, but you could change it up to be something a bit healthier. Add some veggies. Make it a pizza pocket.
The varieties are endless…
Ingredients
- 1 recipe pretzel dough
- salt
- baking soda
- 1 package deli sliced ham lunch meat
- 1 package deli sliced swiss cheese
- honey and mustard (optional)
Instructions
Mix the pretzel dough according to the recipe and let it rise for an hour. Pretzel dough is really just a simple yeast bread. What makes it pretzel-y is that you boil it in baking soda before baking.

When the dough has risen enough, divide it into 12 pieces and roll them into balls.

Fill a big pot about halfway with water, about 6-8 cups. Add a tablespoon of salt and a quarter-cup of baking soda. Also preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
While your pot is heating, flatten a dough ball and roll it out into a sort of rectangle. Place a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on one side. I folded my ham and cheese in half so it fit nicely.

Fold the dough over the meat and cheese. Pinch the edges together securely. Repeat until 12 sandwiches are ready.
Using a slotted spoon or spider, drop the sandwiches into the boiling water one or two at a time. Boil each sandwich for 30 seconds or so on each side.

Remove the sandwiches to a baking sheet. They will still be sticky {and not too pretty yet}, so try not to move them much. I got 6 sandwiches to fit on each baking sheet. Sprinkle a little salt over the sandwiches.

Bake the sandwiches in the oven at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Since my baking sheets don’t fit side-by-side, I had to put one on each rack and swap them halfway through. The sandwiches are done when the bread is golden brown or a bit darker.

Serve the pretzel pocket sandwiches hot right away.

To make a honey mustard dipping sauce, combine equal parts of honey and mustard and stir thoroughly.
