Prairie Lights is a holiday light park with a 2-mile drive-through path of over 4 million Christmas lights in fun and creative scenes.

I love family holiday traditions and my family has attended Prairie Lights during the complimentary media night for several years.

Every year I update this post with the newest information to make planning your trip easy.

Prairie Lights is put on by the Grand Prairie Parks, Arts, and Recreation Department. Every year the displays are different, so we look forward to seeing what new scenes will be created each season.

Although there are a few displays that are the same each year, we’ve seen cute bugs in 2018, space aliens in 2019, and dinosaurs in 2020. Almost everything was new for 2021.

It’s the perfect family holiday activity, whether you’re attending with your kids or bringing out-of-town family. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

The main attraction is a 2-mile drive-through path along Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie, Texas. Lighted displays are set up along the route to take visitors through several fun holiday scenes that change each year.

The drive itself takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Of course, if you go on a weekend or closer to Christmas, it will be crowded and slower.

On the busiest nights, I’ve heard there can be a 1 to 2-hour wait to get into the park before a 1 to 2-hour drive-through. Occasionally if the line before you get to the gate gets too long, they will close early.

To be sure you get in, I recommend picking a weeknight early in the season. Sign up for text alerts or visit the Facebook page to get daily updates. And arrive early and plan to wait (with a full tank of gas, just in case).

Holiday Village

In addition to the lights, there is a big attraction at a stop about 75% of the way through the drive. The Holiday Village includes our favorite part the Lighted Walk-Through Forest.

The forest is a walk-through path and is perfect for family photo ops. It includes even more lights and scenes depicting how the holiday season is celebrated around the world. There are also concessions, shopping, and a few carnival rides.

We love to turn on Christmas music, make hot chocolate and popcorn and decorate the house on the day after Thanksgiving 🙂
