Trick-or-treat alternative for tweens
Our new neighborhood doesn’t do Halloween very big since there aren’t many families with young kids. Plus, my kids are getting a little old for trick-or-treating. That doesn’t mean we can’t have a fabulous night on Halloween!
In fact, hosting a Halloween party for my kids and their friends is brilliant. Tweens and teens still want to have fun and if they’re at home, you can supervise them.
Here are a few tips for getting older kids to party like younger ones, in case they’re “too cool” for a Halloween party.
- Have a costume contest with a prize. This will encourage more kids to dress up. You can even let everyone know that they will get to vote on the winner – if they’re participating.
- Let them enjoy a night of junk food. You can skip the veggie skeleton idea this time.
- Plan a few activities, but expect them to just hang out. Put on a movie (like Nightmare Before Christmas or Harry Potter), make a playlist of Halloween songs, or set up some classic activities like bobbing for apples.
Halloween party decor
To create our Magical Halloween party theme, I combined ideas from Harry Potter and classic Halloween fun. I started with black and white for my main decor, then added a bit of gold and purple to make it look swanky and magical.
First I threw a black tablecloth over one of my kitchen counters to set everything up in one place. Then I used a combination of thumbtacks and sticky tack to hold everything up on the walls.
For wall decorations, I used black streamers, black mini paper lanterns (clipped onto mini Christmas lights), and unfinished wood bats spray-painted black with chalkboard paint.
One thing I love about Oriental Trading is that they have a lot of bulk craft supplies. I got a dozen ceramic pumpkins and spray-painted half of them white and half of them with black chalkboard paint. My son wants to draw on the chalk ones!
The lantern lights add just enough of a glow to make the whole setup look a bit spooky.
I wanted the whole house to look like Hogwarts, so I found these gorgeous gold glitter pumpkin votive holders and added electric tea lights.
If you’re like me and glitter makes you cringe, spray the holders down with a few layers of clear coat finish to seal it in.
Halloween party food
I picked up some cupcakes from the bakery and added these black cupcake wrappers to dress them up.
The paper goods are from this wizard’s realm party package.
How to set up a magic potion candy station
The focal point of this party is obviously going to be the candy. I made potion bottle labels, printed them on Avery mini labels, and stuck them on milk bottles that I ordered for a previous craft project. Again, there were a dozen in the package, so I had plenty for both projects!
Find the download at the bottom of this blog post!
Guests can pour the “potion ingredients” into the paper magic potion cups to make their own magical treat.
You can use whatever candy your kids like, but here’s what I used/recommend to match up with the printable labels:
- Eye of Newt – M&Ms
- Dragon Tooth – candy corn
- Bat Wings – mini peanut butter cups
- Fairy Dust – Nerds
- Slugs – Trolli Sour Worms
- Phoenix ash – Red Hots
- Moon Beams – jelly beans
- Unicorn Horn – Hershey Kisses
- Bezoars – Whoppers
Of course, you could also include some Harry Potter candy, like chocolate frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, and jelly slugs.
Halloween party favors
It wouldn’t be a party without favors, so I got these wizard academy bookmarks and witch’s potion bubble bottles to hand out. Kids of all ages will like bubbles and bookmarks.

Hi, I wondered if you could expound upon which candies you used for what?

Thanks for asking! I’m not sure why I didn’t include them originally, so I’ve updated the post with details on the candies I used.
