Has your family visited Legoland Discovery Center? This fun family attraction includes rides, exhibits, and of course – plenty of LEGO bricks for building. Take a photo tour of Legoland DFW in Grapevine, Texas.
We love LEGO. This summer, the kids and Hubby and I have probably spent the majority of our free time building and playing together. So it only made sense that after Lil’ Wheezy’s LEGO Birthday Party last summer, I had to find a way to make it just a little better this year.
I was still tossing ideas around in my head about two weeks before his birthday when I was contacted by Legoland Discovery Center DFW in Grapevine. Their timing was amazing. Would I like to bring my kids for a visit? You don’t have to ask me twice.
About Legoland Discovery Center
Legoland Discovery Center is an indoor LEGO-themed family attraction with over a dozen things to do, including rides, hands-on activities, and exhibits. It’s geared towards children age 3-10. (Mine are ten and just-turned-eight.)
Location: Grapevine Mills Mall, 3000 Grapevine Mills Parkway, Grapevine, Texas 76051
Hours: Mon through Fri 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Sat 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Sun 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Admission: $18 per person age 3+ at the door; discounts if you purchase tickets in advance online
Our visit to Legoland
While we were waiting outside the entrance to get into Legoland, Lil’ Wheezy posed with one of the life-sized LEGO creations. Once the doors opened, we were invited inside by an enthusiastic tour guide who led us through the LEGO factory to learn how bricks are made. The kids got a chance to turn the crank and everyone got their own LEGO factory brick after the demonstration.
After the tour, we waited in line to ride the Kingdom Quest. We loaded into a roller coaster-like cart and armed ourselves with LEGO pirate guns. The ride followed a track through the dark and shot at “targets” to score points and rescue the princess. The course was lined with spiders, goblins, and all kinds of foes. {It was dark, so photos weren’t possible.}
Next, we headed down the hallway to check out the current exhibit: LEGO Star Wars. There were three different scenes from The Phantom Menace and each was interactive. Lil’ Wheezy drove in the pod race against Sniffles.
After that, we went to LEGO City: Forest Ranger Pursuit. The kids hopped in police cars and drove around the course. Sniffles loved being able to drive by herself.
The next stop on our adventure was the LEGO City Play Zone and Fire Academy. This is a giant playground climbing course where the kids could run while the adults took a break nearby. When they had exhausted a bit of their energy, we grabbed a snack in the cafe. I was really happy to see fresh fruit, sandwiches, and other healthy choices.
After everyone was re-energized, we walked through my favorite part: Miniland. I love building cities, so a replica of all the biggest landmarks in Dallas, Fort Worth, Grapevine, and Arlington was amazing. The lights also went out so that everything could light up “at night.” The detail was really impressive – Reunion Tower, the lighted Pegasus on the Dallas building, the signage at Rangers Stadium, street lights, glass building, and even a few building that had details visible through open windows.
Once the kids had digested their snack, they were ready to hop on the Merlin’s Apprentice Ride. It’s inspired by the LEGO wizard I played with as a kid. Everyone hopped on a bench and buckled in. The benches go around in a circle and riders pedal to make them go up. I rode with Lil’ Wheezy because he was too short to ride alone and of course, he wanted to pedal as fast as we could.
By that point, we had been playing for about three hours and were pretty worn out. We didn’t visit every activity, but there are several others:
- A DUPLO village for preschoolers
- A princess palace full of pink LEGO bricks
- A 4D cinema – Playing Legends of Chima while we were there
- A LEGO race car building and test area
Overall, we had a great time and plan to go back. I think this is a great way to keep everyone entertained on a day that’s too hot or cold to go outside. The building was kind of crowded and we had to wait in lines for a while, but I think that’s going to happen anywhere like this. The exhibit and film change regularly, so I’m curious to see what will be next.
They are also constructing a brand new attraction called Pirate Beach that is an outdoor water park that resembles a shipwrecked pirate crew. It’s opening in August and kids will get to splash and spray water in their swimsuits, then change into dry clothes to play indoors. {Edit: Pirate Beach is complete, but we haven’t visited it yet.}
