I have a mommy confession. After the kids go to bed, I often break out my secrete stash or chocolate. Or cookies. Sometimes chocolate cookies. Okay, sometime chocolate cookie ice cream. I am sometimes not the best example for my kids. Who’s with me? {It’s okay to raise your hand. I won’t tell.} Don’t get me wrong, my kids get their fair share of treats and sweets. The thing is, they like healthy food most of the time. Who am I to argue with that? They also love their snacks, which I put in school lunches, hand out after school, and find them climbing the pantry to get on the weekends. You can always identify a healthy kid by how fast he can climb the inside of a doorway. Just kidding.
School has just been in session for a week and my kids have been taste-testing a new healthy snack: Harvest Snaps. So far, the results have been pretty positive. One of my kids is considerably pickier than the other. My daughter has been known to change her mind halfway through a meal. My son, on the other hand, will eat things he is allergic to, happily. Fortunately, the Harvest Snaps come in six different flavors, so no matter what kind of snack fiend your child is, he or she will probably find one that is appealing.
About Harvest Snaps
Harvest Snaps Snapea Crisps and Lentil Crisps are a healthy baked snack option made from peas or beans. They’re even shaped a bit like snap peas. The plain flavor has just five ingredients: green peas, vegetable oil, rice, salt, and preservative. {Other flavors have more, of course.} There are six flavors altogether.
Snapea Crisps:
- Lightly Salted
- Caesar
- Black Pepper
- Wasabi Ranch
Lentil Crisps:
- Tomato Basil
- Onion Thyme
All of the flavors are packed with vitamins, low in sodium, gluten-free, and {I believe} GMO-free. You can read the nutritional info for each flavor on the brand’s website.
My Harvest Snaps Review
I put the Harvest Snaps in the kids lunches for a few days during the week. {You can see what I pack every morning on my Facebook page.} We also sat down and snacked on them together. Here’s what everyone thought.
My daughter, the picky one, said they were okay. On a scale of one to ten, with one being “rather starve” and ten being “birthday dinner” she gave them a four. She couldn’t pinpoint exactly what she didn’t like, but said the texture was too soft. She kind of liked the Caesar flavor, but the others did not stand out.
My son, the not-picky one said that he liked them a lot. His favorite flavor was the Tomato Basil and he probably would have eaten the whole bag in one sitting if he had the chance. He also liked the Onion Thyme. He asked me to please buy him more of both.
Overall I thought that they were pretty good. Of course, they cannot compare to chocolate cookie ice cream, but for a salty snack they are at the top of my list. I liked the Black Pepper best and the Onion Thyme. Hubby tried them and liked the Black Pepper too.
We all agreed though, that the Wasabi Ranch was too spicy for our tastes. If you like wasabi though, you will love these.
I love that I can just toss this healthy snack in the lunchbox and the kids get a vegetable. If you are a potato chip family, these are a wonderful alternative. For more lunchtime ideas, check out the Lunchspiration website.
