Share the love this St. Patrick’s Day (or any day)! Kids can make a bunch of this rainbow friendship bracelet to hand out to friends.

St. Patrick’s Day is a fun holiday in the US. Wear your favorite green shirt. Eat green food. Pinch your friends who aren’t wearing green. My kids seem to turn colorblind on the 17th and pinch each other anyway.
Not that that’s a whole lot different from every other day of the year.
This year I’m helping them make a St. Patrick’s Day rainbow friendship bracelet and start a new tradition.
Rainbow friendship bracelets
This friendship bracelet has a green stripe, just like every rainbow.
We are going to make up a bunch of bracelets for the kids to wear on St. Patrick’s Day. When they see a friend who isn’t wearing green, they give away a bracelet. Nifty, right?
Help a friend not get pinched.
How to make friendship bracelets
These are pretty easy to make. The hard part is determining how long to cut the strings. For my 8-year-old, 30 inches was fine. For my 11-year-old, I cut the pieces at 32 inches. My kids are on the slim side, so I think for the average elementary kid, 32-36 inches will work.
These are quick to make, so if you make one and it doesn’t fit, you can easily make another.
Supplies
- Scissors
- Embroidery floss in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple

Instructions
Start by cutting each of the colors into a 32-inch piece and line them up together. Fold your line in half.

Pinch the folded end together and tie a knot. The loop on the end needs to be big enough for another knot to go through, but not so big it won’t stay in place. For reference, a pencil should fit through the loop snugly.

Pull the knot tight. Separate the string into three sections for a braid. I liked keeping all of the same colors together and putting the colors next to each other in the same group, but mix it up if you prefer.
At this point, you should have three groups of four: red/orange, yellow/green, and blue/purple.

Braid down the length of the string until you get about an inch from the end. To make it easier, tape the loop end to a table while you braid. this will keep the braid tight.
You could also let the kids work together (more friendship!) and take turns holding someone else’s loop.

When you get to the end of the braid, tie a knot.

To wear the bracelet, just wrap around the wrist twice. Slip the end knot through the loop. If you find the bracelet keeps coming open, try making the loop a bit smaller. You could also add a bead to the knot end that would go through the loop.

I think these would be super cute in three shades of green too. In fact, I might just need to make a few for myself too. Whether you’re planning to wear green or not, let’s start a new tradition that’s all about kindness this St. Patrick’s Day.
