If your tween is starting to be too old for cute lunchbox notes, this is a fun way to still send messages. Download these printable watermelon notes for tweens and print them on sticky notes or card stock to surprise them anytime.
Middle school is the time when many kids start to exert a little more independence. They don’t need you to walk them into school on the first day and are more easily embarrassed by your dorky parenting habits. What used to be sweet is now babyish. What used to be comforting is now uncool.
Independence is great, though, because now you also don’t need to do as much for them. Tweens can do their homework without much help and take on more responsibilities, like packing their own school lunch.
The thing is — if your tween is packing her own lunch, how can you sneak in a dorky lunch box note to reminder her how much you love her??
While you might try some ninja techniques to hide notes in her lunch or backpack just before you head out the door in the morning, tweens are also surprisingly more observant than they were as little kids.
They know where you hid the Oreos and they know if you’ve touched their stuff.
Printable watermelon notes
What your tween probably won’t tell you is that she still likes you doing sweet and thoughtful things, she just doesn’t want her friends to laugh at her. I came up with these watermelon notes for tweens using a set of cute emoji watermelons.
You can print them on regular 8-1/2″ x 11″ card stock and cut them out. I also have a template for printing them on sticky notes.
Printing on sticky notes is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
- Print the template {included in the download} on card stock.
- Stick your sticky notes on the template squares.
- Load the page into your printer so that it will print on the sticky notes from top to bottom. The page should slide right through, but every printer is different so I can’t tell you exactly what will work for you.
I tried a couple of different colors and found that the lightest pastel sticky notes work best color-wise. I think I will order some white Post-It notes, but I haven’t tried them yet.

Sending your tween a note
So we talked about not hiding a note in your child’s school stuff, but there are plenty of other places to stick a note and surprise them. Here are a few ideas:
- on their bed with the clean laundry
- tucked inside a book they’re reading
- on the bathroom mirror
- on the bulletin board or where they might look if they come home from school without you
Would your tween like these watermelon notes? Where would you put one to surprise them?
Cute idea! Even do it for spouses!
Absolutely! It’s fun to surprise your spouse with an unexpected note, even if it just says “have a great day!”
