I love to cook. And I’m always trying to find the balance between healthy and budget-friendly. I make a lot of things from scratch that are easy to buy packaged. It might cost a little more to purchase the ingredients for something – like chocolate chip cookies – than it does to just buy a mix. But the health benefits outweigh the cost for me most of the time. (We all have lazy days, right?) Other things are a no-brainer. In fact, some things, like tortilla chips, I wonder how I paid so much for them before. Homemade chocolate chip cookies and homemade tortilla chips have one thing in common. They both cook on a baking sheet in the oven. I could easily go through a spray bottle of vegetable oil every week. At about $3 per bottle, that gets expensive quickly and isn’t too healthy to begin with. (Organic is about twice as much.) Then I received the Misto olive oil spray bottle as a gift. It changed my cooking routine and has become my best cooking secret.
Misto olive oil spray bottle
The Misto spray bottle is an aluminum canister with a plastic lining and spray nozzle. To use it, just fill the bottle with your favorite olive oil. Screw the lid in place and pump the cap to pressurize. Remove the cap and spray a mist of olive oil.
At first, this seems like on of those as-seen-on-tv items that will just take up space in your junk drawer. It’s really a great idea though. I use it pretty much every day.
Why I love it
Olive oil is one of the healthier options for cooking. I believe that coconut oil might be healthier, but olive oil is definitely better for you than canola or any blended vegetable oil. Using the Misto, I can buy olive oil in a big container and refill the spray bottle as needed. At price per ounce, a bottle of olive oil is significantly cheaper than one of those spray cans at the grocery store.
For some recipes, using butter to grease the pan is still my preferred method. But when I just need a little something to prevent sticking, the Misto is perfect. The spray is fine, so a little bit goes a long way. I don’t really have a way to measure, but I feel like we are using a lot less oil now.
Heathy and budget-friendly? That’s a win.
Homemade tortilla chips
I mentioned at the beginning of this post that I now only make tortilla chips at home. If you’re buying a few bags of chips every week, you’re probably dying to know how I make my own. I buy a package of corn tortillas at Aldi. They’re about $2 for a package of 80 tortillas. I make my own flour tortillas sometimes, but I feel like that many corn tortillas would take forever to make.
To make corn tortilla chips, preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Take a stack of about 5 tortillas and cut them into 8 pieces each. Using the Misto, sppray a little olive oil on a baking sheet and lay out the tortilla triangles in a single layer. I use 5 tortillas because 40 pieces just fits my pan in a single layer. You can, of course, make more or less. Spray the top of the tortillas with more olive oil and season to taste with salt.
Bake the chips for about 15 minutes. You can flip them halfway through if you like, but it isn’t essential. Keep an eye on them near the end and remove any that are crispy. I’ve noticed that it takes just a minute to go from perfectly done to burned.
You can buy the Misto olive oil sprayer at places like Bed, Bath and Beyond and Wal-mart. It is also available online at Amazon.com and usually priced around $10. If you try the Misto sprayer, I’d love to know what you think.
Disclosure: I received this product as a gift from a family member. This post is not sponsored and I just wanted to share a product I really love.
