Clutter. Stuff. It’s everywhere, right? Even on your computer. But it’s important stuff, so you can’t just toss it – or delete it. It needs to be organized so you can find it. For some reason, organizing my computer folders has been a challenge forever. My computer is probably messier than my house. After all, I can fit as much as I want in there without anyone else noticing. Today I’m sharing how I finally figured out how to organize photos on my computer.
How to organize photos
This is a really easy thing, so naturally, it took me years to figure out how to do it right. By right, I mean a way that works for me. I hope this idea will help out lots of folks, but if it isn’t your cup of tea, no worries.
I have a single folder marked “Pictures” that all of the photos from my camera go into when I upload them to my computer.
Inside my Pictures folder, I have folders labeled with each year: 2015 Photos, 2014 Photos, 2013 Photos, etc.
Inside each year, I have folders labeled with each month. I numbered them too, so they always show up in order: 1 January, 2 February, etc.
Inside each month, I have a folder for each project, event, activity, or whatever. The labels for those are simple and descriptive so that I can search and find them easily. I might not remember when I photographed our trip to the Dallas Zoo, but I can just search for “Dallas Zoo” and the folder comes up.
When I upload photos from my camera, the computer creates a new folder under Pictures and automatically names the folder with the date, which is handy if you can memorize exactly when you took every photo. So, no good for me.
I start by dragging that folder into the correct year and month. From there, I either rename the folder with the subject of the photos or redistribute photos into existing folders.
Example: All the new photos are from spring break, so I just rename the folder Spring Break and I’m done. Some of the new photos are from spring break, but others are for a new cookie recipe I’m blogging. The spring break photos go into a folder named as such; the cookie recipe photos go into a different folder in the same month/year.
When I’m looking for a specific photo set, I can usually remember the month that I took it when it is recent. If I can’t, I just search the Photos folder for whatever the name of the subject is. It will always find the folder.
Quick tip for bloggers
I keep almost all of my photos for my blog in with my other photos. My printables are in a separate folder labeled as such (and then in sub-folders using the same method).
Let me know if this method works for you or leave a comment sharing how you organize photos on the computer.
