Decorating for fall is a fun way to transition your home from summer to winter. Now is the time to simplify and declutter before the winter holiday season hits. A lot of fall decorating ideas revolve around Halloween, but I’d much rather do things in September and leave them out until after Thanksgiving. That’s what inspired me to make this easy fall embroidery craft. It’s simple and quick to do, even if you’ve never embroidered before. Plus, the fall colors and nature elements make it perfect for the whole season long.

Fall embroidery craft

Making the embroidered hoop art is the most time-consuming step in this project. It’s pretty quick, though – I did each hoop in about 15 minutes. If you’ve never embroidered by hand before, I’ll take you through the steps. If that’s your favorite hobby, feel free to skip to the end.

Supplies

  • fall embroidery patterns
  • wood or plastic embroidery hoop
  • fabric (Pick something light and thin that you’ll be able to see through.)
  • embroidery thread
  • embroidery needle
  • scissors
  • pencil

Cut a piece of fabric that is slightly larger than your embroidery hoop. I used a 4-inch hoop, but you can print the pattern larger or smaller to fit other hoop sizes.

Take the fabric and the paper pattern to a  window. Put the pattern behind the fabric and trace it with the pencil onto the fabric.

Once you have the pattern on the fabric, you’re ready to stitch.

Take apart the hoop by unscrewing the nut. Put the fabric on top of the inside hoop and fit the outside hoop over it, making sure the fabric is taut and sticks out on all sides. Tighten the nut.

Cut a length of thread. I usually aim for about 12 inches or so. Tie a knot in one end and thread the other end onto the needle.

For each stitch, come up from the bottom and go back into the fabric. Just follow the dotted lines around; there’s not a wrong way to go. If you run out of thread, need to change colors, or have to skip a big space, tie a knot on the back and trim the thread close. Just re-thread the needle with more thread and start again.

If you are using a wooden hoop, you can just leave the finished design in it to display like a frame. You could also take the design out and frame it, sew it onto something, or use it to make this super-cute bunting.

Fall embroidery bunting

To make this bunting, I stitched all three embroidery patterns onto separate pieces of fabric. You’ll also need:

  • jute cord
  • tape
  • ribbon (I just used scraps.)
  • wooden clothespins

Easy fall bunting in the window

I used mini wooden clothespins instead of the large ones so they wouldn’t be too heavy.

Cut the jute cord wider than your window, or wherever you’re going to hang the bunting. Tape either side of the window. (You could also use tacks, but I wanted something that wouldn’t damage the window frame.)

Start in the middle and clothespin one of the embroidery designs to the jute. Take the cut ribbon and tie pieces on either side of that. Then just clothespin the other embroidery designs on either side, making it nice and symmetrical.

I added a few other fall decorations to my window sill to round it all out. Just ignore my kitchen sink. (Keeping it real here.)

Thanks! I’ve heard of people printing directly on fabric, but I suspect my printer would jam permanently.
