My family is a group of very individual persons. We are good at compromise, but rarely agree on a favorite anything. Pizza toppings. Movies. Board games. When sorted into houses at Hogwarts, we would all be put in different ones. A few months ago this was really brought to my attention when we were reading a book in the style of Choose your own Adventure. I was reading aloud and every time we got to a choice, both kids disagreed on what to do. Sometimes rock paper scissors is the only solution. But not with pie. As queen of the individual persons, I am brilliant at coming up with a four-way solution. I created Choose your own Pie so that everyone can have whatever filling they like best.
Choose your own Pie supplies
I hesitate to call this a recipe. You could make all of the ingredients from scratch, but if you’re making pie for four different tastes, you might want to take a few shortcuts. Here’s what you need:
- refrigerated pie crust
- muffin pan
- cookie cutter(s)
- fillings (see below)
Choose your own Pie instructions
Preheat the oven according to the pie crust instructions (mine said 350 degrees F) and let the crust sit on the counter at room temperature for a while. I prefer Immaculate Baking Company for refrigerated crust and it says half an hour.
Roll the crust out flat and pinch together any cracks.
Using a cookie cutter, cut out as many pieces of the crust as you can. I used the biggest circle I had, 3-5/8 inches. You could use a bigger one for a taller finished product. It would also be fun to use a shaped cookie cutter, like these flower-shaped mini lemon curd tarts by The 350 Degree Oven.
Lay each cutout on top of a muffin cup and gently poke it into place. I got six mini crusts out of a single 9 inch pie crust in a single layer. I probably could have gotten several more if I had re-rolled the leftover crust and cut again, but I was feeling lazy.
Bake the mini crusts in the oven at 350 degrees F for 8 minutes. Take them out and let them cool in the pan for about five more minutes. Then, remove them to a cooling rack until they are completely cool.
These can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days. Fill them with whatever pie or non-pie filling you like. Here are a few ideas.
